Week ending Sept. 7, 1997 A.D.-
5 Points- Birmingham, Newby's- Memphis

Dear Diary,

Well well well, my little droogies, as they said in Clockwork Orange. We played Birmingham again for the 3 millionth time, and we all have to say how cool the city has been to us over the 12 years we have been together. We have probably been in or through the Magic City literally 500 times since we started the Tour Without End, and, if anything, it is probably going better than ever. Bham also has great sentimental value since Louie's (R.I.P.) was one of the first clubs we played outside of Nashville, and it is where we began our long relationship with Bunky Anderson, now retired from Southeatern Attractions. Bunky is one of the greats; he helped me and the band immeasurably. (Like Bill Puryear of Crescent Moon does today).

As for the present, Friday was a blast. Friends Nadia Sherifie, Stacy Goodwin, and Jenny Cohen were all there along with Jason Nix and several hundred other nutballs. 5 Points, as we all know, is one of the best facilities we play- pro from top to bottom. We had a great drive down there, and then Mom, our RV, got stuck- straddle over a dip in the road. Dibble, our sound man, and Chris, guitar player par excellence, got it out- how I will never know.

I do want to take a moment to talk about our man Steve Dibble. Dibble is the guy we depend on to sound good, and he is one of the best in the business. You never see him onstage, but he is a very valuable member of the group who works his magic on the sound board. He also is the guy who has gotten our mailing list names for us at the shows and who maintains the RV for us.

Party Hats off to Steve!

After a 3 month hiatus we were back at Newby's in Mumphus and had one of our best times ever. With the problems with sound volume with the fuddy- duddy neighbors finally worked out, the club is really on a roll. Our friend Michael Donahue of the Commercial Appeal was there along with a feisty crowd. U of Memphis folks were there along with Christain Brothers and a number of other crazies. The Bohemian Rhapsody, the hardest number we have ever attenmpted, went over to our great satisfaction- so much that I broke down sobbing at the end of the song. Hankies were provided and I continued on. Chris looked very cool with his shaved head and went over very well with Jessie's Girl- as usual.

We'll be back there in a few. I promise not to be so emotional- I'll leave that to Whitney Houston.
