Weeks ending June 29, 1997 A.D.-
Sports Rock Cafe, Chameleon Club, Ivory TuskDear Diary,
Sometimes things fall out of the sky and bounce on your head; other times they land right in your lap. That's rock and roll. That's life.
But things that fall south of the breadbasket are much easier to accept- as was the case with Sports Rock Cafe in Montgomery, AL. We only booked the show barely a week before it took place, and it ended up being a helluva time. Our agent Bill Puryear, served it up nice and phat before us, we swung, and so did the club. Coming off of Jubilee there a couple of weeks ago, we were stoked again to see Jimmy D of the Montgomery Independent and the other rapscallions. Thank youuuu to all those who saw us.
Now as for this little place called The Chameleon Club- hmmm, believe we played that before. A few million times. But mo is mo betta, so it was good to get back there. The club still continues to improve under the stewardship of Joe Barker, Able Helmsman. With Atlanta being a melting pot and all, I am constantly reminded of all the different cities and colleges we have played- Georgia, Georgia Tech, Vandy, Auburn, and Alabama, to name a few. My bud and drummer friend Tommy Landstreet came along with Carolyn Porter, Birthday Girl. Barkley Toole, holder of the record for most Mel shows, was also there heaping on to his total. I was jazzed to have several people come up and tell me they had visited the site, giving further proof to Atlanta's being one of the most wired towns in the country.
Mike Tyson was getting an earful the Saturday nite we played at the Tusk (in Tuscaloosa), so we didn't start til the stroke of midnight. We have played there just a few times as well, but are glad to be back after a high-atus. No fights broke out, tons of friends were made, and we all made plans to do lunch- soon.
Crow turned into a pumpkin, then just as quickly turned back into a human once he realized he would be baked and eaten even if Thanksgiving is a ways off.
This week is the Freedom Fest July 4 at Oak Mountain in Birmingham.
See y'all.
